Brief descriptive memory:The former Convent and Seminary of Our Lady of the Angels of Brancanes, was founded in 1682, its construction was directed by Captain Pedro da Silva Dodarte, by diligence of Friar das Chagas, with the royal support of D. Pedro Il. He belonged to the Order of Friars Minor. The Church was opened for worship in 1696.By the earthquake of 1755, the Municipality of Setúbal began to operate in the Convent of Brancanes. During the French invasions, the convent was occupied by Napoleon's troops, who transformed it into a military hospital, violating several graves, to steal whatever was of value in them. In 1811, the reconstruction of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, of the third of S. Francisco, desecrated and destroyed by French soldiers in March 1808, on May 10, 1812 the worship in the church began againIn 1910 on the night of October 4 to 5 the Convent was set on fire. From that year on, it housed military units, initiating a process of transformation/adaptation to new functions, throughout the twentieth century, which did not respect the nature of the property. From 1981, the Health Service Battalion (B.S.S.) occupied the former facilities of the extinct Coast Artillery Regiment, in the former Seminary for Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady of the Angels, former Convent of Brancanes. It also served as the Brancanes Prison (1998-2005), in November 1998, the property was deactivated from the previous military functions, for reassignment to the Ministry of Justice. In 2007 it was acquired by the current owners. The convent building has a rectangular plan, consisting of two long longitudinal wings and three transverse rooms, which form two identical squares, with central cloisters. It has a space that occupies half of one of the longitudinal wings, leaning against the first cloister where the church that was dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels operated. On the ground floor there were three porticoes in round arch that led to an atrium that was transformed into a chapel when the Convent was occupied by the extinct Health Service Battalion (BSS) of Setúbal, from 1981. To the left of this space is the building's entrance, where panels of blue and white tiles are preserved, representing the daily occupations of the friars. In July 2008, the project for the rehabilitation and transformation of the Brancanes Convent into a hotel facility was submitted for prior approval. The project has already received the favorable opinion of the City Council, with the safeguarding of constraints such as accessibility and the landscape setting.
