Seller Insight
Dating back to the 17th century, this utterly charming part-thatched country cottage occupies a sought-after location close to the centre of the delightful Cambridgeshire village of Alconbury Weston. "We fell in love with the house the minute we laid eyes on it," says the owner. "When we initially came across it on Rightmove we didn't actually have our house on the market, but it's just so pretty and it's beautifully positioned in this gorgeous village that we simply had to have it, and luckily everything fell into place."

"We tried to tell ourselves that the house just needed a lick of paint to bring it up to scratch, but in actual fact it needed a great deal of work so over a period of a few months before we moved in we did absolutely everything. We've upgraded the electrics, added a new boiler, had new flooring laid, the kitchen and bathrooms were beautifully refurbished and the whole house was redecorated. From the outside it's the archetypal thatched country cottage, but inside it's really spacious, all of the principal reception rooms are double aspect so it's incredibly light and bright and the layout flows beautifully so it's comfortable for busy family life and also really conducive to entertaining."

"One of the other things we loved about the property when we initially came to view it was the superb amount of outside space," continues the owner. "The large dining hall has two sets of French doors, one on either side of the room, and one set leads out into our very pretty courtyard area, and the other leads out to a larger area of garden where we have loungers, our BBQ and a covered seating area, which is just to the side of the garden studio. Both areas are very peaceful and private, and when the sun is shining they both essentially become outside rooms."

"The kitchen, which flows straight into the large dining hall, is the real heart of the home. It's nice for day-to-day life and a great space for a party. However, the master bedroom is probably our favourite. It's tucked away at one end of the house so a real retreat, and it has a lovely big window that floods the room with light."

"The location of the house is just beautiful. Alconbury is a really friendly village and a hive of activity in terms of dog walking, cycling and horse riding. The pub, which has just reopened, does fabulous food, there are a couple of really nice tearooms and there's a village shop for those last-minute essentials. For everything else we usually head into Huntingdon. We also have Hamerton Zoo Park within striking distance and Holly Lodge Farm, which is a place where you can go to let your dogs run wild in a very safe and secure environment while you enjoy a quiet cup of tea in the café. There's just so much to do in the local area and we've thoroughly enjoyed exploring all it has to offer during our time here."

"Outside we've had a lovely garden studio built. I paint and do a lot of resin work so for me it's been a fantastic creative space, but it could be a home office or even a gym."

"We're moving because I have horses and I would like somewhere with a bit of land so I can keep them at home, but if I could pick up this house and drop it in few acres I really wouldn't hesitate," says the owner. "It's a beautiful house, totally unique and for us it's been a really wonderful home."
