Alcoutim is a Portuguese border village belonging to the district of Faro, until the administrative division, established in 1832, belonged to the province of Alentejo.
It is the seat of a municipality with an area of 575.36 km²
The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Mértola, to the east by Spain (Andalusian municipalities of El Granado, Sanlúcar de Guadiana and San Silvestre de Guzmán), to the southeast by Castro Marim, to the southwest by Tavira and to the west by Loulé and Almodôvar.
