History

Its location, next to the tide line, allowed that, until the seventeenth century, the parish was an important center for the exploration of salt pans and maritime trade, being even elevated to the head of the county, with jurisdiction over 31 towns and 10 municipalities.
It received its first charter in 1110, granted by Count D. Henrique, and later D. Sancho I donated the lordship of Esgueira to his daughter D. Teresa in 1210. In the fifteenth century, the parish was inhabited by D. Pedro d'Eça, great-grandson of D. Pedro I, giving rise to one of the noblest families in the region.
In 1515, King Manuel I granted a new charter to the town of Esgueira, which maintained its importance until it was integrated into Aveiro as a parish, after the decree of November 6, 1836 that extinguished the municipality of Esgueira. Between 1528 and 1836, Esgueira was an independent municipality, composed of four parishes: Esgueira, Cacia, Nariz and Palhaça.
