Montargil with 4,000 inhabitants, has a long history, modern village facing development through, mainly the new tourist projects, 27 km from the county seat is located on the right bank of the River Sor.
The settlement of Montargil dates back to the pre-Roman era, in some places of the parish as in the serra de Montargil, some ceramic objects and Roman graves have appeared in recent years. In S. Martinho, on the left bank of the River Sor, traces emerged of an ancient settlement, which by its configuration should be from the time of the Lusitanians, soon pre-Roman. In place of the Tables, were found remains of a road Lageada, which perhaps belonged to the Via Romana that from Lisbon was headed for Mérida the fact of passing through Montargil demonstrates the importance that, already at that time, the imperial people voted for the parish.
Its foundation as a parish dates back to the early days of the Monarchy. It was established by D. Dinis in 1315, who gave her a charter.
