When we remake our regional history it is fair to put in the first chapter the parish of Tourém.
It received a charter from D. Sancho I to maintain border surveillance from the Castle of Piconha and its connection, on a neutral path, to the heart of the Couto Misto formed by the villages of Santiago, Rubiás and Meaus. There is even certain news that the Sancho Povoador passed through there, before, obviously, 1211: "... when ibat rex domino Sanchio pro a Sancte Pelagio de Piconia..." Even after the definitive establishment of the capital of Barroso's lands in Montalegre, the prerogatives and privileges of Tourém were maintained: suffice it to say that the so-called "honors" were burdened in providing men for the garrison of Piconha. In fact, the defense of the site was a primary issue for the entire population of Tourém as can be seen by the holes opened in the front of the houses, on the doors of the houses, in order to avoid assaults, sieges and waits or ambushes. Given of unusual curiosity is the fact that the very old church of St. Peter (with Romanesque remains) does not appear in the catalog of 1320. For it does not appear because it belonged, in the spiritual, to the Diocese of Ourense. For this reason (it is tradition and taken for granted) that, at some point, in the flowering of Galician Liberalism, a bishop of Ourense, of the Quevedo family, took refuge in Tourém, for political reasons. The bishop, being in a strange country, was in his own land, because Tourém was part of the Diocese of Ourense.
Tourém, long before the charter, was honored in a deed of donation of goods to the Monastery of Celanova, for the years of Christ of 1065! It is perhaps the most cosmopolitan parish in the area with daily visits of the "labregos" and "tourists" of Galicia Irmão! These outsiders can enjoy, with all the comfort of the facilities bequeathed by Casa dos Braganças, rebuilt for housing tourism.
In this village the court of the ox of the people was transformed into the pole of the Ecomuseum where the issue of smuggling, mixed couto, political exiles and the cross-border relationship is portrayed.
