Although the parish documents referring to the place of 1534, Amareleja is already included in the censuses of D. João III (held in 1527).
According to what is read in "Restored Portugal - Luís de Meneses - Conde de Ericeira, Lisbon 1751", already by the Restoration Wars, Amareleja was the victim of looting of Castilian enemies.
Several archaeological discoveries such as tapirs, Cromeleque-like graves, cave paintings, flint axes, traces of metal casting, Bronze Age graves, graves excavated in the rock, almost always discovered at random, when working on or on road construction, are evident signs of the permanence or passage of generations of much more indented times.
Also appeared traces of Roman civilization, such as the pavement of a dwelling, circular-lided graves containing bowls and fragments of lacrimal, coins of Claudius, fragments of tegulas, atafona stones, stones from hand mills. In the Barranco de Valtamujo there are remains of a Roman bridge, which would possibly connect with another existing river Ardila and near the port of the Castle. This bridge would give passage to the residents of the banks of Vale de Navarro where there are many traces of ancient life.
During the reign of D. Sancho II, Moura (current seat of municipality of the parish of Amareleja) was conquered from the Moors and established as landlord, according to the feudal regime.
D. Sancho II handed over the Village of Moura to the knights of the Order of the Hospital. These knights left marked in Amareleja their passage and presence, and the marks of the order can be seen in landmarks that have their cross.
But data or references do not go beyond 1527. It is verified in documents of this time, relating to the census carried out by King John III, that the place already had 55 fires. We can give a period of about two hundred years for the creation of these 55 fires, since the living conditions were not favorable for rapid development.
We can say that by the end of the fifteenth century the religious needs of these people led to the construction of the Church of Santo António which is considered the Patron saint of cattle. This small church was built in a small hill the relative distance from the places called "Montinho" and "old village".
On April 4, 1990, bill no. 513/V was created that aimed to raise the village from Amareleja. But there was a setback, the number of voters – 2758 – was less than the 3000 required by law.
On 8 September, of the same year, it was discussed in the Assembly of the Republic that the lack of voters was due to the carelessness of voters who did not vote.
Finally, on 20 June 1991, the Assembly of the Republic approved the Project, published on 16 August. The following year, the anniversary of the elevation of Amareleja the Village was celebrated with an air festival.
