Santarém, district capital
At the top of a plateau, Santarém is a viewpoint over the fertile region of the wetlands, the valley of the Tagus River known for agriculture, cattle breeding and bullfighting.
The city was part of the lands of the Order of Christ, which financially supported the Discoveries of the Portuguese, having developed a lot at that time, which is still reflected today in the monuments, so important for the history of Portuguese art.
The meeting point to start the visit to Santarém is usually the Garden of Portas do Sol, the fortress of the old castle that D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, took by surprise from the Moors, on a night climb in 1147. After admiring the landscape from this natural viewpoint, where the UrbiSacallabis Interpretation Center is located, we can then go explore the city.
Towards the historic centre, we will find the Clock Tower, from the 14th century, today the Núcleo Museológico do Tempo. It is also called the Gourd Tower, remembering the objects that are at the top and that served to propagate the sound of the bells that gave the time, but that someone said represented the hollow heads that projected it. Very close by, there is the Romanesque Church of São João do Alporão transformed into a Museological Center of Art and Archaeology, with the head built in Gothic style, one of the first examples of the application of this architectural style in Portugal.
