The characteristic irrigation system of the region was established at this time: water sources that fill pools from where they are led to farmland through ditches. Probably the cultivation of the vineyard was already introduced although destined to the production of table grapes and raisins.~~In the fourteenth century the fortified tower of Melicena was built by the Nasrids, on a previous one. At this same time the Berbers founded Alfornón, north of the municipality. The surrender of the Moorish rebels in the Alpujarra on March 8, 1500 led to the creation of the lordship of Torvizcón by the Crown. Sorvilán belonged to him until well into the nineteenth century.~~In 1571 the repopulation of the area began with 2423 families from León, Galicia, Asturias and Castile. Once this process of reforestation was completed, the massive clearing of land and the progressive disappearance of the holm oak forests in the area began. The vineyard was introduced throughout the region, already destined to the production of wines.~~At the end of the seventeenth century the lordship passed by way of marriage to the Count of Cifuentes, Fernando Silva and Zapata-Portocarrero. At that time a phase of splendor begins. The cultivation of the vineyard extended along the entire southern slope of the Contraviesa, to the sea. The grapes of the upper part, being more difficult to ripen, were destined to the production of brandy (in Alfornón there were five distilleries). Those of the middle slope, which would cover the slopes surrounding the nucleus of Sorvilán, were destined to the production of wine and to the elaboration of the famous "spirit of wine". Those of the lower part, which would correspond to the area of Melicena, El Saltadero, Los Yesos and the adjoining hamlets, were destined to the production of raisins. The cultivation of mulberry also had its importance: its leaves were transported to the silk factories of the Alpujarra Alta, especially to Ugíjar.~~As the century progressed, the area stabilized and the colonization and ploughing of new lands grew at a great pace which resulted in an increase in population.~~In the nineteenth century the population of the municipality was reduced by half when Polopos was emancipated together with its future annexes: Portuguillos, Haza del Trigo, La Mamola or Torre del Cautor. The area remained stable both economically and socially until the end of the century, when the arrival of phylloxera ended the cultivation of the vine. The inhabitants of the area became owners of some lands that until now had belonged to the lordship.~~With the arrival of the twentieth century began the progressive economic decline of the area despite the fact that the cultivation of the vineyard was reborn and the almond tree was introduced massively.~~The coat of arms of the municipality consists of servo leaves (the toponym "Sorvilán" derives from Servalán, forest of Serbos) and a medieval tower representing the Castle of Barranco del Madroño. The green background at the top symbolizes the cultivation of vineyards and almond trees, while the blue at the bottom, the sea.~~Geography~~
