São Miguel is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo, with an area of 19.47 km² and 2,659 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 136.6 inhabitants/km².
It is the most important parish in the municipality, where most of the services, commerce and the town hall are located.
Shortly after arriving on the island of São Miguel, some of the first settlers came to settle in this place, which seemed propitious to them due to the fertile appearance of its lands and its easy access to the sea. They called Vila Franca do Campo the nascent village, because it is located in a flat and extensive field and because it has free rights. According to history, it was its founder Gonçalo Vaz Botelho, who settled here in the middle of the XVIII century. XV.
