There are records of its existence as early as mid-1595. With four floors and more than 200 rooms, it was built by the Sebolinhos de Barahona family, an influential family in the region that transformed the entire area around it into one of the largest wheat fields in Portugal, creating Morgado da Esperança from 1750.
As it is a residence of the nobility, it had the privilege of hosting three members of the Portuguese Royal Family: Queen D. Maria II, King D. Pedro V and King D. Luís, during their trips to the city of Beja, in addition to having received other royalty from other lands in its dependencies.
It has a beautiful Baroque-style chapel with gilded carvings dating from 1721.
